Reducing flood risk in Central Vietnam

Using modelling to improve flood management

Situated between the mountains of Laos to the West and the South China Sea to the East, over 10 million people call Central Vietnam home. Frequent typhoons in the region often results in water-related disasters, threatening lives and property. To reduce the risks in this area, the Vietnamese government needed a flood risk assessment to develop an integrated flood management plan. We used our MIKE FLOOD software to analyse the flood events in the entire Huong River Basin in the region’s Hue Province. This enabled local authorities to develop evacuation plans based on up-to-date information on flooding risk, ensuring the safety of residents.
