Europe experienced historical drought, nations suffered massive floodings, marine biodiversity is under threat, and we have PFAS in our water environments and drinking water. These are examples of the global water crisis, which became even more evident in 2022, and which was addressed at the UN 2023 Water Conference.
DHI offers advisory services and technologies to solve global challenges related to water and water environments. In 2020, DHI launched a new strategy, DHI+, to accelerate development, and in the fiscal year of 2022, DHI delivered solid growth in all business units and geographies – in Europe, Asia, North America and Africa.
Revenue increased by 8.2% to EUR 119.4 million, and net project revenue increased by 9.5% to EUR 98.4 million. Order intake also increased by 20.9%. Both EBITDA and EBIT increased by EUR 0.7 million despite costs related to DHI+ and increased investments in developing new technologies.

DHI is well under way with its DHI+ strategy, which is founded upon the UN’s SDGs. The objective is to combine the strongest skills in the industry with unique technology and a global presence to accelerate the fulfilment of the SDGs.

We launched a number of new digital solutions for offshore wind turbines and wastewater among others, and we continued the development of our digital platform for water modelling, MIKE Powered by DHI. We also succeeded in attracting more research funds than in the previous year. Our close collaboration with ambitious clients, partners and universities is crucial to our innovation’,

DHI expects to continue the growth in both revenue and EBIT in 2023.
Selected projects in 2022
- DHI delivers digital twin of wastewater treatment plant in Gothenburg. A digital twin of the wastewater treatment plant for the Gothenburg region in Sweden helps future-proof the region and utilise the existing infrastructure as efficiently as possible. With the implementation of DHI’s Future City Flow, which is a digital twin of the entire system, the wastewater utility Gryaab has gained a better overview and real-time information about events in the tunnels.
- DHI enables protection of marine biodiversity in Auckland. With the solution, Auckland can quickly get a digital overview of freshwater-derived contaminants in the receiving coastal waters and evaluate the effect on the water quality. The authorities are consequently able to make informed decisions about where it makes the most sense to take action to protect marine biodiversity.
- DHI contributes to the design of the world’s first energy island in the North Sea with metocean study. A metocean study reduces design risks in the world’s first energy island in the North Sea. DHI’s experience in the region and existing models help shorten the process. Risks are reduced with assessments of metocean conditions with accurate and validated evaluations of wind, wave and water conditions.
- UNEP-DHI Centre helps UN nations achieve their sustainable development goals. The UNEP-DHI Centre is a partnership between the UN’s environmental programme (UNEP) and DHI. The centre is internationally recognised for its work on supporting sustainable management of the world’s water resources. In cooperation with UNEP-DHI, the UN nations can get closer to achieving the water-related sustainability goals before 2030 with structured programmes, training, guidance and digital tools and data.
