DHI UK & Ireland is very pleased to invite you to our annual Symposium 2017.
This free event is your opportunity to learn more about the varied applications of our modelling software, and our complementary technologies, through client-led presentations. The Symposium provides an excellent opportunity to meet DHI experts, as well as your contemporaries from consultancy, academia, regulatory authorities and research organisations.
We will be starting this year's event with drinks reception and conference dinner, hosted by DHI UK & Ireland, on the evening of Monday 26th June 2017. We encourage everyone to arrive on the 26th to relax with a drink, good food, some informal networking, and news about our forthcoming MIKE 2017 release.
The main event will start at 9:00am on the Tuesday 27th June 2017. This day will be your opportunity to tell everyone how you have been using MIKE software over the past 12-months, share newly acquired knowledge and innovations, learn how we use our software, and network with your peers. Lunch will be provided, and the day will finish around 4:30pm to give you time to travel home. You are more than welcome to stay on later if you wish to meet with us face to face.
CONFERENCE PROGRAMME
To open the conference, CH2M and Environment Agency will deliver joint a keynote presentation on “New Standards for Modelling of Flooding in Open Coasts and Large Estuaries”.
Hakeem Johnson (CH2M) will present on the work to develop nationally consistent standards for coastal flood modelling and a national baseline of model standards for existing coastal flood models. Niall Hall (Environment Agency) will present the next steps that the Environment Agency is taking regarding modelling standards. This presentation is essential for all professional modellers working in coastal and inland environments.
Confirmed speakers for the day include:
Josh Gibson and Andy Wareing (Atkins) on their coastal modelling work to support the ‘Flood & Coast 2017’ award winning Dawlish Warren flood relief scheme. The scheme won the ‘Best Sustainable Resource Management’ category at Flood and Coast 2017.
Alan Hills (SEPA) will speak about SEPA’s role as regulator for expansion of Aquaculture in Scotland. SEPA believe numerical modelling can be used for much more than just demonstrating regulatory compliance. Alan will discuss how output from numerical models, combined with observational data, have the capacity to yield better resource use within the industry. The presentation will outline the development of MIKE modelling tools which are helping to shape future industry expansion.
Mike Streetly (ESI) will present the complex integrated hydrological and water quality modelling using MIKE 11 and MIKE SHE to support the Environment Agency’s River Thames Scheme – a series of proposals designed to reduce flood risk from the River Thames near Heathrow, the largest area of undefended floodplain in England.
Kevin Barry (Arup) will describe the development of a MIKE 21 FM HD model to assess the risk of flooding from wave overtopping and tidal inundation of a site in Co. Clare, Ireland. A very significant storm event in January 2014 resulted in severe coastal erosion and flooding to Cloughaninchy beach. A coastal flood and erosion risk management feasibility study of the site was subsequently commissioned to understand the level of risk at the site and also to develop an engineering solution to mitigate the associated risks.
Maria Roldin (DHI Sweden) will speak about storm-water management from an integrated hydrological perspective.
Oliver Way (Arcadis) will present a project which included modelling of a temporary jetty structure to assess the impact on hydrodynamics, pile scour and sediment transport from dredging operations.
Mark Britton (DHI Australia) will talk about an ensemble modelling approach. DHI-AU has developed a suite of web-based tools to assist MIKE users generate ensemble inputs. These tools will be available to all MIKE users shortly.
Fernando Alvarez (Intertek) will talk about the importance of selecting the right tool for the job and the importance of developing a fit for purpose modelling approach to address the question being asked on a case by case basis.
Adam Fulford (ABPmer) who will talk about assessing the potential impact of a tidal lagoon hydropower scheme on coastal processes using MIKE 21 FM.
