Barthauer Software GmbH is a leading software manufacturer of integrated asset management systems. Their network information system BaSYS provides comprehensive tools for managing the entire life cycle of supply and drainage networks, including water, wastewater, and storm water networks. DHI’s hydraulic solutions complement Barthauer’s state-of-the-art software solutions in the field of network management. With our partnership, the hydraulic performance of a sewer system can be clearly demonstrated – thanks to the integrated hydrodynamic simulation method using BaSYS and MIKE 1D.

Challenge

Sewer network operators require constant updates on the hydraulic conditions of their systems to ensure optimal network performance. In an operational setting, time is of the essence. Working with separate systems not only takes up unnecessary time, the integrity of data and information could be compromised. The operators would benefit greatly from a more efficient way to manage their sewer networks.

Solution

Barthauer integrated MIKE Powered by DHI’s MIKE 1D engine using MIKE 1D API, with the Barthauer interface ARENA directly in the network information system BaSYS. This means that BaSYS users can access the calculation parameters and results of MIKE URBAN directly.

For simulation, the hydrodynamic program uses DHI’s MIKE 1D calculation engine. The Saint-Venant equations underlying the channel network simulation are also solved for the following boundary conditions:

  • Lowering curves for crashes and gradients
  • Pulse losses due to cross-sectional and direction changes
  • Dams including hydraulic losses in structures and shafts, especially in collecting troughs and outflow under shooters
  • Storage in structures and shafts

The characteristic library enables the standardised and scalable specification of volume, pump, flow and throttle characteristics.

Results

Direct simulation of network elements

The channel objects of the hydraulic network can be calculated directly from the database without changing the master data.

Interactive visualisation of results

Current project status clearly presented to decision makers thanks to predefined database queries and reports.

Ability to avoid instabilities

This is possible due to the simplified numerical solution of short-length Saint-Venant equations and automatic optimisation of iteration intervals.

‘With DHI, we have gained a stable partner with a similar company philosophy. This is important for long-term cooperation. With MIKE 1D, we can now offer our comprehensive solution package BaSYS, used for managing supply and disposal networks, with the most competent possible partner in the hydraulic world.’
