Participating in Climate Week NYC 2015

As part of a cleantech delegation with the Federation of Danish Industry (DI), a DHI expert will discuss solutions for cloudburst management.

A cleantech delegation from DI will be visiting New York City 23-26 September 2015. The visit will be part of the seventh edition of Climate Week NYC 2015, which runs 21-28 September.

The delegation will showcase Danish cleantech solutions for smart urban water, energy efficiency, and smart urban mobility to American counterparts. Jesper Kjelds, DHI’s Vice President of Urban Water, will be part of the delegation.

During a workshop entitled ‘Rethinking Rain for Climate Resilient Cities’on 25 September 2015, he will discuss integrated solutions for cloudburst management developed by DHI. Cloudbursts are sudden, violent rainstorms that can result in extensive urban flooding due to storm water systems being unable to handle the runoff.

‘We work with our client globally to map and assess flood risk and develop plans for reducing potential impacts from extreme rain events’, explains Jesper. ‘Our integrated urban water solutions also extend into provision of real-time early flood warning systems to assist emergency response teams (such as police and fire departments) with responding quickly and effectively’.

Jesper will discuss concepts behind and experience from work DHI has done in conjunction with urban flood risk reduction projects. He will also present information about the solutions, technologies, and engineering behind project implementations, including:

  • flood risk planning and mapping
  • real-time early warning
  • lessons learned
The use of integrated and holistic solutions, both at a detailed level and at a higher strategic level, play an integral role in understanding and assessing flooding risks associated with cloudburst events. It is also important for evaluating system improvements to mitigate risks and provide resiliency into the future.
