EMMP for an iron ore distribution centre in Malaysia

We conducted a comprehensive Environmental Monitoring and Management Plan (EMMP) for a new iron ore distribution centre being set up by VALE Malaysia Minerals Sdn Bhd in Malaysia. The result: the dredging part of the project was completed on time and within the budget, while environmental impacts were kept at a minimum.

VALE Malaysia Minerals Sdn Bhd – a subsidiary of Brazilian metals and mining giant VALE S.A. – is developing a new iron ore distribution centre in Teluk Rubiah, a coastal region in Manjung district, Perak, Malaysia.

The project required comprehensive dredging works, which would produce sediment plumes that could impact in sensitive receptors at significant distances from the work area. Moreover, mitigation measures based on standard approaches were not possible due to non-conducive natural environmental conditions.

As such, we executed the EMMP in a way to significantly reduce the risk of the dredging. Potential impacts were predicted before being realised, and the dredging programme was optimised. We ensured that the dredging was carried out smoothly, with minimal impacts and little or no problem.

This project proved that such EMMPs are very effective in minimising the potential impacts of dredging works and demonstrated the future potential for such dredging related EMMPs in Malaysia.
