Danish Journalists visit DHI Singapore

A group of journalists and editors from a variety of Danish Newspapers, Journals, Broadcasting Stations and News Agencies visited DHI Singapore’s office on March 3, 2011.

A group of journalists and editors from a variety of Danish Newspapers, Journals, Broadcasting Stations and News Agencies visited DHI Singapore’s office on March 3, 2011. After taking a close look at the DHI-NTU Research Centre, they heard an introductory talk by Centre Director Dr. Ole Larsen. The journalists were intrigued to hear about DHI’s engagement in environmental management and monitoring activities all over South-East Asia, and it’s spearheading role in establishing guidelines and techniques of International Best Practice regarding the environmental management of dredging and reclamation works close to sensitive environments.

After this talk, a bus took the group of journalists and representatives of the Research Centre to the Changi Water Reclamation Plant, Singapore’s most advanced and one of the largest Water Reclamation Plants in the world.  This plant treats used water with state-of-the-art technology, thereby effectively removing the solids and nutrients that are present in the used water. After treatment, the used water is safe to be returned to the environment or to be further treated into highly purified drinking water, the so-called NEWater.

A lift ride took the journalists all the way down to 52 metres below the earth’s surface to visit the DTSS pumping station. There, used water collected in the enormous Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) is filtered through coarse screens and subsequently pumped to the top by 10 large pumps. This marks the start of the Liquid Treatment Process.
After this inspiring visit, the journalists refreshed themselves with a good drink of NEWater.
