PS21 ExCEL Gold Award

The Coastal Protection and Restoration of Mangrove Biodiversity at Pulau Tekong-Project, carried out under the direction of Singapore’s National Parks Board (NParks) and the Housing Development Board (HDB), has won this year’s PS21 ExCEL Gold Award.

The Coastal Protection and Restoration of Mangrove Biodiversity at Pulau Tekong-Project, carried out under the direction of Singapore’s National Parks Board (NParks) and the Housing Development Board (HDB), has won this year’s PS21 ExCEL Gold Award.

The project aims to protect one of the last pristine stretches of mangrove shoreline in Singapore - which was facing serious erosion problems -by restoring the coastline and planting thousands of mangrove saplings. DHI contributed to the Tekong Mangrove Project by carrying out an Environmental Monitoring and Management Plan (EMMP), a large part of which is focused on monitoring environmental changes or impacts as a result of the restoration project.  The EMMP included monitoring of the existing mangrove forest, rare trees on the shoreline, and health of the newly planted saplings.

The PS21 prize was awarded to the Tekong Mangrove Project for its advanced project design to halt mangrove erosion, its innovative use of green engineering and biodegradable materials, as well as the wide-scale public-private cooperation. The award will be presented to NParks and HDB on November 11 at the PS21 ExCEL Convention 2011, which will take place on November 10 and 11 at the F1 Pit Building.

The PS21 ExCEL Convention is an annual event and platform for public officers to showcase, recognize and celebrate innovative ideas, projects and efforts that have created value within the Public Service.
